I was on the Antarctica and Chilean Fjords tour in February 2006. We spent two weeks aboard the MV Discovery which was an outstanding ship. There were about 550 passengers and 300 crew. All areas of the ship were spotless. There was always a crew cleaning and polishing....always ready to be of assistance. Food was excellent. Entertainment was great. If I were to choose a cruise ship for future cruise.....it would be the MV Discovery.
We were blessed with perfect weather. It is not always that way....you need to keep that in mind. We were told that there would be a maximum of four landings...weather permitting. We made two landings in Antarctica and walked amoung the penguins. It was a thrill just to set foot upon the continent. The other two landings were not possible due to ice in the ports. Instead we boarded the zodiaks and rode alongside the blue-green ice bergs. This was spectacular.
We had good weather during the time we spent cruising the Chilean Fjords. One stop was made there and we were able to walk alongside a glacier.
We left the ship near Santiago, Chile. This is one of my least favorite cities of the world. You really need to be aware of pickpockets...and there is not all that much to see. Since it was my second time to Santiago, I chose to line up my own hiking excursion to nearby mountains and had a great day.
