ATM rather than Traveler Cheques or cash

ATM s exist just about everywhere these days.  So don't bother with the AMex travelers cheques or feeling obligated to exchage money at the airport currency  exchange desks.

Re: ATM rather than Traveler Cheques or cash

I agree.  I took my ATM (debit) card and a second credit card (just in case, but I didn't have to use it).  Others in my group brought cash to exchange.  What a hassle that was.  They had to find a bank or American Express office.  Travelers checks come in the form of a card now.  That makes them easier to use but there are a bunch of little surcharges.  ATM or debit cards are so much more convenient than any other method.

One word of caution, though.  Let your bank know in advance that you will be using your ATM/debit card on a trip.  You may want to increase your daily spending limit.  Most banks count weekends as one day, and most have a $300 per day limit.  Also remember that's 300 US dollars, not euros or any other currency.

Re: ATM rather than Traveler Cheques or cash

Good suggestions! I would add that you should let your credit card companies know that you'll be travelling, too. Many of them will shut down your credit line if your card is used internationally without proper advance notice. Also, if you're carrying cash in USD$, make sure it's not all in $50s or $20s. These are the most frequently counterfeited denominations & may cause you trouble if you're trying to exchange large amounts of money. Have your passport ready when you are exchanging currency -- many locations won't do it if you don't have US ID.

Happy travels!

Question on Money

So say If I am going to Italy for 8 days... i want to take $1000.00 with me.. I want to know should i put half on my ATM(master money)card?  Should I exchange my US money in advance at a travel exchange store..there is one near me in California.. (I do not want to do it over in Italy so I figure if I do it in advance it would be better) Of course I will keep some US dollars with me..

Is what I am saying above a good idea??  I just want to be able to use my card for things I want to purchase and bring back with me and maybe save the Euros for tips and or food and wine purchases..  Can you give me your feedback on this idea..I need help!!!

Re: Question on Money

If you want a few Euro's to have on hand prior to landing in country, then I would do some exchange before you leave. I always carry a little ($200) US Cash in case of an emergency, but primarly I just use my ATM card to withdraw EURO's when I need cash, and use my credit cards for major purchases. Don't forget, the Credit Card company will hit you with a service charge of around 3% everytime you use your card overseas. So I primarly get enought Euro and pay cash for the majority of things. You will not have a problem finding an ATM machine. Also.. avoid drawing cash advance from your Credit Card, rates are high.

Good luck.. enjoy the trip.. Italy is FANTASTIC.
