Passport & visa requirements

A valid passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Canada. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, please be sure to have your required identification with you as well.

Baggage allowance

Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Be advised that most domestic airlines impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage, and that you are responsible for any such costs. Contact your airline for detailed information regarding luggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that Go Ahead travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other internal transfers, which may include train connections or flights. One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it does not exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height). Make sure you label your baggage and carry valuables, medication and documents in your carry-on bag.

Clothing & packing tips

We recommend packing light, loose-fitting clothing that provides comfort when exploring the sights. A sun hat, sunglasses and a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers are also recommended. Hiking boots might come in handy, if you plan to do any extensive walking or hiking. It’s always a good idea to be prepared for any event—a lightweight jacket and emergency rainwear are advised. Restaurants are typically informal in this region of Canada. Remember to bring a small carry-on bag for your overnight in Kamloops.

Health

Please be aware that you will be traveling at altitudes between 7,000 and 9,000 feet above sea level on this tour. These high altitudes can sometimes cause difficulty breathing and other health problems with travelers who have heart problems or respiratory ailments. If you suffer from any of these conditions, please speak to your doctor regarding any potential health risks. Even healthy travelers may sometimes experience altitude sickness, a temporary condition featuring symptoms of headache, fatigue, nausea and lightheadedness. Until your body acclimates to the higher altitudes, we suggest that you drink plenty of fluids and limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol. Otherwise, there are no major health risks when traveling to this region. During the summer months, take care for sun exposure and heat. It is always advisable to check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and personal travel requirements.

Cuisine

One of the most enjoyable aspects of traveling is the delightful variety of local cuisine—even if you’re not traveling far. Most of the cuisine on this tour is well-known, but look out for especially delicious French, Acadian and indigenous influences.

Transportation

Flights arrive in Calgary, where a Go Ahead representative escorts you to your hotel for check-in. Return flights depart from Vancouver. A train ride is included on the Rocky Mountaineer from Banff to Vancouver via Kamloops. All other included transportation on tour is by private motor coach.

Electricity

All regions operate on the Canadian standard 110 volts.

Time zones

Most of your tour will fall on Mountain Standard Time (MST), which is two hours behind Eastern Standard Time (EST). Vancouver is on Pacific Standard Time (PST), which is three hours behind EST. For most of your tour, when it’s noon in New York City, it’s 10am on tour.

Currency

Canadian dollars will be the currency on your tour. You can find kiosks at the airport with good exchange rates, but the best way to change your money is simply by using an ATM.

Tipping

At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity. We recommend tipping in your tour country’s currency, the equivalency of $3USD/CAD per person per day for your driver and $6USD/CAD to $9USD/CAD per person per day for your Tour Director. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalency of $2USD/ CAD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash. Please keep current local currency exchange rates in mind when tipping.

Purchasing excursions on tour

If you have not yet purchased your optional excursions, you may be able to do so while on your tour. Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa or MasterCard as payment for optional excursions. Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged. Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See the separate “Optional Excursions” sheet for more information.

Fantastic Scenery, great guide

My husband and I have just returned from the Canadian Rockies tour. Our timing (mid August) was perfect as far as weather. Patrick, our tour guide was very familiar with all areas of the tour and beyond...he is a wealth of knowledge and has a warm personality. The tour was not stuffy. We enjoyed everything from start to finish but most especially liked the ice blue lakes, opportunity to explore the communities and the two day Rocky Mountaineer trip. We upgraded to Gold Leaf service on the train. The catered care, exceptional meals and full windowed coaches were well worth the upgrade. Our group was a great mix of ages and backgrounds that made for lively conversation and the backdrop for a trip to remember.

Hello! Thank you for writing about your incredible time on tour. You certainly chose an amazing itinerary. Between the weather, your Tour Director, and the gorgeous scenery, it sounds like everything went off without a hitch. We hope that you will join us for another adventure soon!

Rocky Mountains 2016

I had a great time on this tour to the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The scenery was fantastic. The tour guide and bus driver were excellent is giving everyone on tour their knowledge of the areas we traveled in. The hotels were very comfortable and well kept. I walk on a glacier, went white water rafting and even climbed a small mountain. These things I never thought I would do. The Rocky Mountain train ride was superb. I would recommend this tour for everyone. Thanks for a great time.

Worst Tour Director

Bus driver was the best & most knowledgeable. Tour director was very likeable person, but least knowledgeable of all the tour directors I have had with any tour company. And I have taken at least 15 tours. In most cases, the hotels were very poor selection & included meals were not up to the expectation & past experience.

Hello! One of our Quality Control team members reached out to you to learn more about your experience. We regret to hear that you feel your Tour Director could have been more knowledgeable. We are certainly alarmed to hear that. We are also surprised that the hotels and meals were not to your liking, as they are generally well-rated on this tour. Please give us a call at 1-800-597-0350 if you would like to share more about your concerns. You can ask directly for the Quality Control department. Thank you for your valuable feedback, and we hope to hear from you.

Absolutely amazing!

This was my first tour with Go Ahead and certainly won't be my last. I lost my husband 4 years ago and although I don't mind traveling alone, I chose Go Ahead as it gave me the opportunity to travel on my own, but yet I really wasn't. I didn't have to research the hotels, where to eat, what to see, etc. - everything was done! And a bonus was that I never worried about my safety. I will admit I was a little anxious in the beginning, but had no reason to be. From being picked up at the airport until I was dropped back off, everything was completely organized and very well orchestrated. We had a busy itinerary, but were allowed to tailor it somewhat to meet our needs. Our tour director Alexander (Sandy) was fantastic and made a point of checking in with us regularly to make sure we were satisfied with our accommodations and overall enjoying ourselves. The group I was with was very welcoming. I was likely a whole generation younger than most, but that wasn't a barrier at all. The trip itself more than met my expectations and am looking forward to scheduling another with Go Ahead next year.
