  • In the Netherlands, simply prepared meat and fish dishes, substantial soups and hearty stews are local staples. Snack food traditionally features fish—you might try maatje, raw green herring served with onions—but pancakes, french fries, doughnuts and waffles are just as plentiful.
  • In Luxembourg, the culinary influences are mostly Germanic. Smoked sausages, hams and hearty stews are popular.
  • In Belgium, seafood is of a very high quality, and mussels steamed in white wine are a favorite. Patisseries offer decadent pastries and cakes, and you won’t want to miss indulging in favorites like french fries, handmade chocolate, locally brewed Abbey-style beer and, of course, Belgian waffles.
